                                                The death of Governor Cone
                                     Lake City’s Frederick Preston Cone, Florida’s 27  Gov-
                                                                                     th
                              ernor, died July 28, 1948, at age 76 of a cerebral stroke suffered a
                              week previously. His funeral, pictured below, was attended by many
                              and was held at Lake City’s First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr.
                              E.F. Montgomery Sr.  of First Presbyterian officiating. Governor
                              Cone had more than 60 honorary pall bearers, including a former
                              governor, the governor-elect, and two Supreme Court justices. Ac-
                              tive pall bearers were all Lake Citians: R.A. George, Parks Glover,
                              Lewis Green, O.K. Holmes, Jack Parks, and Sam Summers.
                              Every store and office in Lake City closed for two hours during the
                              funeral service in honor of Gov. Cone, who was buried in the old
                              family plot at Prospect Cemetery on the Woodpecker Route just north

                              of White Springs, where members of the Cone Family have rested for
                              over 100 years.
