Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Lake City became increasingly important as a transportation
hub in the last part of the 19th century as roads and railroads con-
nected it to other places. For example, workers completed the Atlan-
tic Coast Line between Lake City and Fort White in 1888.
The Atlantic Coast Line train, seen here in the 20th century,
connected Lake City to many other cities.
The county superintendents of public instruction for the 1880s
probably included these men: Julius Potsdamer (1879 - 1885), W.A.
Sheffield (1885 - 1887), and E.G. Persons (1887 - 1893).
The police chiefs that decade, as far as can be determined,
were Gottschalk Potsdamer (1878 -
1880), Rupert Charles (1880 - 1885),
and Tom Michaler (1885 - 1890).
The mayors that decade were W.J.
Bacon (served from 1876 to 1885) and
an unknown person (1885 - April 1893).
Among the local people of Lake
City, Eleanor Henry Hunter posed
for a photo at age 16 in 1888.
She was the mother
of Ruth Robarts.
