                                                                       Chapter Nine: 1890 - 1899

                                                 Chapter Nine: 1890 - 1899

Lake City became the first Florida city to have electric lights,
when the Lake City Water and Light Company, a private company
owned by local attorney and real estate broker William Bush, began
operating in 1891. The 1890s were an important decade for Lake
City for education and for agriculture. For example, the devastating
1894 - 1895 freeze effectively ended the growing of citrus in north
Florida and forced farmers to rely on other crops.

                                         In 1891, Professor Peter
                                 Henry Rolfs began the Herbarium
                                 at FAC by collecting Florida
                                 specimens and receiving similar
                                 specimens from other institutions.
Today that entity is part of the
                                 Florida Museum of Natural History
                                 at the University of Florida.
