Chapter Nine: 1890 - 1899
An 1896 surveying class at FAC included (left to right)
Professor Harry P. Baya, Joe Sears, Jessie Bending (later
Professor Baya’s wife), ?, Sallie May Rowlett (later Mrs. D.N.
Cone), and Will Rogers. Lake City’s Baya Avenue was named
after Professor Baya’s family, which had donated
some of the property to the college.
The terrible freeze in 1895 severely damaged Florida’s crops
and hurt the economy of the state as a whole so much so that FAC
officials had to reduce the already-low salaries of the faculty there.
For example, in 1897, the yearly salary of the head of biology and
horticulture was $1,200.
