Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
The 1899 FAC football team
The faculty organized some of the male students into a foot-
ball team with the expectations of playing intercollegiate games, but it
would not happen for some time, partly because of the perception, as
pointed out in the yearbook, that football was simply an excuse for
men to maul, injure, or blind the players of other teams.
The Commandant of the Cadets, Lieutenant Cox, undertook
to prepare the players for a game and enlisted the aid of several fac-
ulty members in order to ensure that the games would be cleanly played:
Professors Blair and Miller and Rev. Mr. Tims of the Presbyterian
Church of Lake City. The players were no doubt disappointed in not
finding an opponent that season, but at least they posed well for a
photo.
