A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks

was paved, and when Highway 100 lo Lake Butler was paved. All of those were dirt road back in my
early childhood, and that was the only paved roads there were in existence in Columbia County until
about 1947, give or take a year or two, when they began to pave some of the County dirt roads, and
these highways were referred to as farm-to-market highways.

The first such road to be paved happened to be the one that ran in front of our house, but that was done
while I was away from home in the Army, and when I came back, the old dirt road was a nice paved
highway. That is known today as the Price Creek Highway, and it is also known as County Road 245.

After that, many of the other county graded roads were paved, and the most recent was Old Wire Road,
extending from County Highway 240 down through Herlong Road, which paving project is in progress
at this time. Future plans are to extend it on past Herlong Road all the way into Fort White, I understand
Also, it is my understanding that the next county graded road to be paved is Herlong Road, extending
from Ellisville past the Race Track and all the way over past the Tustenuggee Highway and terminating
at Highway 47, north of Fort White. 1 have no idea when that project will be completed.

Of course, if Governor Cone and the Georgia Governor had not got together and made the deal to pave
the old Cone Road, which became U.S. 441, no doubt it would have been paved before now anyway.
But the fact that the Cone Farm was on that road, north of Lake City, I am sure had a lot to do with it
being paved years ago when it was actually done.
