A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks
We wound up where the four states come together, the Indian Folk had a booth charging S3.00 to get up
to it. It was in the middle of no-where, Lenvil said, “We aren’t paying S3.00”, I said, “I’ll pay it”, Lenvil
said, “No you’re not, it’s the principle of the thing”, I said, “Lenvil, I have to go to the bath room”, all
they had was porta-potties, but it was worth S3.00.
Lenvil took me on a helicopter ride that went right up to the glacier you see on the Paramount Pictures. I
think of that beautiful experience every time I see that glacier.
We went to the Grand Canyon, got out of the car, Lenvil said, “You seen it”, yes, I seen it, he said, “It
won’t change, I’ll be backing the car out”!
On an airplane, one of the stewardesses spent the whole trip talking to us. Lenvil let me make her a ring
out of a hundred dollar bill. She ask if we wanted anything, I told her 1 collected bottles and would like
to confiscate some of those whiskey bottles, referring to the little miniature bottles. As we left, she
handed us two of the tallest bottles of champagne. They burnt when my house burnt.
On a shale slope out of San Antonio, Texas, we saw a mama wild cat with two kittens, she was patiently
waiting for them to catch up with her. It was a lesson to me of a mother’s love, she was risking her life
right out in the open waiting for her kittens.
Somewhere Lenvil bought a watermelon, I said, “How are you going to cut it”? He produced some floss,
and we pulled out in a field of com stubble and ate watermelon, cut open by floss.
Another memory is where Lenvil bought a whole pineapple, this time we stopped and he bought a
butcher-knife and we went down into a dry creek bed and sat upon some pretty big rocks, and ate the
sweet delicacy.
On a trip on a plane, Ray Charles was on the plane, we had to change planes for some reason, we looked
and saw Ray Charles sitting, 1 went over and him being blind, made my presence known, and told him I
just wanted to hug him, he said, “That will be alright”, his man had gone to check on their flight!
On one trip Lenvil took one of his grandsons with us. We were eating lunch, Lenvil asked his grandson,
“How is your meal”? The teenager replied, “It’s not up to my standard”, he was thousands of miles from
home without a nickel in his pocket, telling his granddaddy, the meal wasn’t up to his standard.
When Lenvil’s secretary of 25 years, went to retire, Lenvil bought her a new Town Car. Lenvil bought a
$5.00 watch and put the keys to the car under the watch. At the going away supper, I was sitting directly
across from his secretary; Lenvil gave his speech of how she had been a Blessing to him and his
business. Then he presented the watch to her forlier faithfulness and all, as he gave her the watch, I told
Lenvil she had a look on her face that said, “A watch”, then Lenvil told her to look under it, and they
pulled the curtain to reveal the beautiful car sitting outside!
When my house burned, I was in Ohio, in revival. I called Lenvil, while we were on the phone, Lenvil
asked me, “What are you going to do with all those clothes you have filled every closet in my house
with”? I said, “I’m going to give them to the homeless”. Lenvil said, “I’m talking to the homeless!” 1
have always thought that was funny, profound, but funny!
Beadie asked Lenvil, “How come you get along with jack, better than most other people?” Lenvil said,
“Jack lets me be myself’!
Lenvil was in the Lincoln place, when a feller he knew was trading in a beautiful metallic blue 2000
Lincoln Town Car with a quarter gray top. God spoke to Lenvil and said, “That’s Jack’s car”. Lenvil
