A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks

machines. You simply get what you make, and you have no influence over it. Those winnings just

happened to be on my 80 birthday.

Jack has been very excited about my doing this book, and he wanted to be sure that I included
something in the book about our relationship with each other. I suggested that he simply take his pen
and paper and write a section, or a chapter, in this book, and he consented to do that, and the following
is word for word what he wrote down. There were a couple of sections that he wrote that I left out, since
I felt that a couple of the paragraphs were heaping undo praise on me, and I didn’t want to seem to be
bragging on myself in my own book.

So the following is written by Happy Jack, and we are nearing the time when this book will be finished.

It was a blessed day for me when I met Mr. Lenvil Dicks, even though the first time he heard me preach,
he said, “Jack, no one can call you an opportunist”, I asked, “Why not?” he said, “Because you had the
opportunity to quit two or three times, and never took one of them!!!”

About that time 1 had contracted Diabetes 2, Lenvil got his doctor, Dr. Giebeig, in Lake City, Florida, to
take me as a patient. I very well would not be here today if he had not done that!

Also 1 have got to see lots of places and beautiful country I would not have got to see if Lenvil had not
taken me on trips. On one trip of many we covered 8,000 miles in 3 weeks and went into and through 31
                  states.

1 got to see the Giant Redwoods, and the beautiful coastline of California. Crossed the Golden-Gate
Bridge in San Fran Cisco, viewed the Grand Tetons in Wyoming.

Nearly got a fine for kicking a buffalo chip in one of the bubbling pools in Yellowstone. A policeman
stopped us, accusing us of messing up the P.H. of Yellowstone National Park.

In Montana the speed limit was, “Safe and Prudent”, Lenvil got in the back seat of the new Lincoln he
had rented, 1 set the cruise on a hundred miles an hour, and drove for an hour. After while I looked in the
mirror and saw Lenvil was awake watching me, he said, “You like that, don’t you?”I said, “I sure do”.

Course, we had to stop in Las Vegas, Reno, and Tahoe to donate!

One place in Seattle, Washington, we were stopping for the night, the motel had only one room with one
bed for $ 128.00, Lenvil said, “We need two beds”. We left there and within a few blocks found a Days
Inn with two beds for about $50.00. God Blessed in lots of different ways on our trips.

After driving several hours to get to Mt. Rushmore, we got out of the car, looked up, Lenvil said, “You
seen it”, I said, “Yes sir, 1 seen it”, he said, “I’ll be in the car”, he said, “Five minutes or five hours, it’s
not going to change”, I said, “Let me run and buy some post-cards”, I had to move fast to keep up with
                   him!

The second time we went to Mt. Rushmore they had booths up to collect money for parking. The man
said to Lenvil, “$20.00 for parking”, Lenvil said, “Where can I turn this car around and it not cost me
anything”? The man said, “Right here”, Lenvil said, “I’m not paying $20.00 to park, and you can tell
Mt. Rushmore to kiss my tail”. Lenvil is probably the most unselfish, and generous man I know, but
sometimes he says, “It’s the principle of the thing”!!!
