A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks

                                  GETTING A NEW BABY BROTHER

Mrs. Nettie Pearce sometimes helped in the delivery of children in the neighborhood and she is involved
in another early memory of mine. When 1 was not quite 5 years old, 1 remember waking up one
morning in bed with my older brother Tribble, who must have been about 18 at that time, and 1 could
not figure why I was in the bed with Tribble. I jumped up and ran into the other part of the house where
Mrs. Nettie Pearce was cooking our breakfast, and I remember being surprised even at that young age to
find Mrs. Pearce, or Aunt Nettie, as we called her, in the kitchen cooking in our house of all places. She
told me I had a new baby brother and I remember being very excited at the thought of having a brother.

At that age, I had no knowledge or thought of how babies arrived, or where they came from, and 1 had
not of course noticed at all that my Mother was pregnant. Therefore Rodney’s birth was a great surprise
to me, and the beginning of what has become a life- long and close association.
