A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks

Therefore, for the 2 or 3 days we spent as the house guests of Dr. Dicks and Dolly, all I ate during the
time I was there was corn Hakes.

In later years, when Reed Dicks and his wife, and sometimes part of their family, would come up to
Lake City in the summer time to visit their relatives, his first words when he would see me were “Hello
there corn Hakes”. To his dying day, and after years and years of calling me corn Hakes, that is all I ever
heard him refer to me as. I really wonder if he knew my real name was Lenvil, but I was so flattered that
he remembered me at all, that 1 had no objection to being known as “Corn flakes”.

I remember Dr. Reed Dicks with a great deal of fondness, as he always had something funny going on or
some joke he was involved in. Most doctors I have known have had no sense of humor at all, but not
Reed. He always had something funny going on.

Dr. Dicks was about 6 foot 3 inches tall, and as round as a mule. I would say that placing his weight at
400 pounds would be a conservative estimate. Also, any time he was introduced to a woman, she was
about to get a bear-hug whether she wanted one or not. Also, she might get a kiss right square on the
mouth if she did not keep her head out of the way. Dr. Dicks loved the lady folks as much as I loved
                      corn flakes!
