Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams

THREE CHS FOOTBALL STORIES... Van “Iron Man” Giebeig once intercepted a pass

and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown. After the long run, a teammate asked him how he felt.
               Van answered, “Tired, man, tired.”

Jim Pitman tells of the game where a visiting team’s offensive line lined up backwards - their
backsides facing the defensive line so they could run a trick play. Did it work? “No,” Jim says, “the

play just fizzled and they fell apart, just like you’d think it would ...”
Tiny Long tells how Cone Revels got the nickname “Don’t say a word, Cone.” Hard-nosed

CHS Coach Hobart Hooser repeatedly yelled those words at the talkative Cone during a critical
game in hopes of avoiding an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty — and the nickname stuck a lifetime.
HERE COMES THE JUDGE ... Judge Wallace Jopling always enjoys telling a good joke

and here is one of his favorites: A physician walked into a dance hall one night and was shocked to
see one of his oldest male patients doing a wild and crazy dance with a very young woman. The

physician asked the man why he was doing such a fast dance at his advanced age. The man said,
“Doctor, I’m just following your advice. You told me to get a hot mama and be cheerful!” The

doctor said, “No, I told you that you had a heart murmur and to be careful!”
BUMPER STICKER_______“Tell God your problems. He has to be up all night anyhow.”

                                              Johnny and O. J.

                                                        July 5,1994

JOHNNY AND O. J.... John Lamb (CHS 1964) was an outstanding defensive tackle when

he played for our Tigers under Coach Wink Criswell. In fact, John was so good he later played two
years of varsity football at the University of Florida, where two of his teammates were Lake City’s

Randall Jackson and recent CHS principal Brian Jetter. But before John went to UF, he played two
years of college football at Northeast Oklahoma Junior College where he made the national junior

college All-Americateam. That junior college All-America team also featured a dazzling running
back from California who was destined for future fame and notoriety. His name - O. J. Simpson.
