Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
Congratulations to the CHS Class of 1959. Have a great reunion!
THE COLUMBIA COUNTIANS’ REWARD FUND ... After CHS left the building on
West Duval Street, it moved to a new building on Pennsylvania Avenue and got off to a successful
start. But then, in April of 1961, the new building - “the pride of the community” - was seriously
vandalized one night. Furniture and equipment were wantonly damaged. Windows were broken.
Animal “guts” were strewn throughout the offices and classrooms.
The community was outraged at the damage done to their new high school building. An
intensive investigation followed but officials were unable to identify the vandals. The inquiry
continued. Citizens started a reward fund to try to buy “information leading to the arrest and
conviction of the guilty.” The reward fund grew and was widely publicized but still there were no
arrests. Community anger did not cool. Two years later, reward money was still being added but
to not avail. To this date, no one has ever been charged. Even now, 33 years later, the case remains
an unsolved mystery.
