Gainesville was paying about $35,000 per month for UF’s water bill. The C ity of Gainesville felt
that the cost was getting excessive, so it asked the legislature for relief. The legislature agreed and
so UF has paid its own water bill for the past 22 years.
SHORT AND SWEET . . . Sportscaster Pat Summerall (CHS, 1948), is well known for
keeping his commentary short and to the point, as opposed to his co-announcer John Madden, who
is more talkative. A New York Times newspaper story once playfully parodied Pat doing a play-by-
play version of Ernest Hemingway’s book, The Old Man and the Sea:
“Old Cuban. Fisherman. Sea. Marlin. Harpoon. Sharks’ feast. Brave old guy. Broken knife.
What a struggle! John?
CLOSING PRAYER_______ I will close out 1994 with one of friend A. K. Black’s favorite
prayers: The Lord bless you and bind you, tie your shirt tail behind you, and hide you in a hollow
log so the devil can’t find you. Amen. Happy New Year!
