                                                Unusual Games

UNUSUAL FOOTBALL GAMES ... Two weeks ago in Tallahassee, FSU and UF played
a football game that was unusual because FSU overcame a 31 -3 fourth quarter deficit to tie the game.

Here are some other games I have seen that had some unusual aspect to them.
LAKE BUTLER VS BAKER HIGH, 1994... Lake Butler’s team looks a lot like our CHS
team. They have near-identical uniforms, both sport purple and gold colors, both are nicknamed

Tigers, both call their home field “The Jungle,” and both play the same “jungle” music before their

games. As for Okaloosa County’s Baker High, they have an unusual mix of UF and FSU tradition.
Their colors are garnet and gold but their nickname is Gators. Their band plays the “Seminole
Chop” but the fans do the UF Gators’ “Jaws” clapping motion. As for the Baker football team, it

is unusual in that the team passes almost every down and uses about five different passing
formations, a lot for a high school team.

ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF VS. BELL HIGH SCHOOL, 1992 . . .
Most of the St. Augustine players cannot speak or hear, therefore the quarterback called no audible
signals - the players moved when they saw the center snap the ball. For the same reason, the team

had no cheerleaders and no radio cast. For the pre-game coin toss, the referee asked the St.
Augustine captains if they wanted “heads or tails” by demonstrating to them to pat their head or their

behind to indicate heads or tails. Bell High School, one of the smallest in Florida, also had an
unusual aspect - one of their offensive tackles, dressed in full football uniform, did double duty and
marched with the band at half-time.

FLORIDA VS. GEORGIA TECH, 1951... This game was played in a torrential downpour
that turned Florida Field into a quagmire. There were hurricane conditions just off the coast, and

gale force winds blew throughout the wet, sloppy game. Georgia Tech, led by their All American
running back, Leon Hardeman, was ranked number one in the nation at the time so the Gators saw

                                                            -172-
