Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
Bolita, or maybe it was Cuba, gave me one of my happiest childhood days. A young friend
“hit” the lucky number one day and won $7 - a week’s wages for us - and took four of us to a
carnival. We spent the whole $7 on food and games and rides. Two of the older boys even went to
a “hootchy kootchy” show.
We had so much fun that day we thought the “Sweet Chariot” had swung low and carried us
home.
Things in Common
April 27,1993
Here are eight pairings of Lake City people who have something successful in common with
each other.
Gene Cox (CHS, 1952) and Faris Brannen (CHS 1965) both became high school football
coaches and won state championships. Gene won two at Leon High (1969, 1974) and Faris won at
Frostproof in 1992.
Charlotte Phillips (CHS, 1956) and Mary Newsom Barrows (CHS 1970) both became
journalists and are now editors at their respective newspapers, the Honolulu Advertiser and the
Charlotte Observer.
E. J. “Tiny” Long, Jr. And Slade Howell both graduated from CHS in 1959 and both later
earned doctor’s degrees. Tiny is Dean of Academic Programs at St. Petersburg Community College
and Slade is a surgeon in North Carolina.
E. H. “Buddy” Bedenbaugh (CHS, 1954) and Vanessa Dean Arnold were both CHS
teachers who earned their doctor’s degrees from the University of Florida. Both then went to
Mississippi to teach at the college level. Buddy is an administrator at Southern Mississippi and
Dean is an associate professor at the University of Mississippi.
John Wood and Matt Burns both graduated from CHS in 1953 and both got football
scholarships to Louisiana State University. After college, both went to medical school and are now
doctors. John is a dentist and Matt is a thoracic surgeon.
