Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams

Emmett Jefferson “Pat” Murphy (CHS, 1942) has been serving as a consortium

administrator to Five Colleges, Inc. (University of Massachusetts; Amherst; Hampshire; Mount
Holyoke; and Smith). Previously, Pat had been Afro-American advisor to the African nations of

Tanzania and Ghana, living in Accra, Ghana. One of his life’s highlights: he cruised ten months
alone on his 34-foot boat “Sea Sprite” to Central America and the Caribbean.
Buford Galloway taught agriculture at Mason City High School, then became principal at

Fort White Public School, then served as Columbia County Superintendent of Schools for twelve

years (1956-68). After Buford left Columbia County, he served as assistant superintendent of
schools in Duval County where he retired and later moved back to West Florida. Two years ago,
Buford, ever the Good Samaritan, stopped to assist some people who apparently had car trouble.

The people had tricked him, and he was attacked and robbed. After hospitalization, Buford fully
recovered and became active in working to improve benefits of retired teachers. Working at the state

level, Buford was instrumental in getting retired teachers a monthly supplement to be used to pay
               for health insurance.

Gene Cox (CHS, 1952) now coaches football at Aucilla Christian High School. Last season,
his top running back, Derrick Taylor, led the entire state in scoring with 198 points - an average of

nearly 20 points per game. Speaking of Gene Cox, his Leon High School football team once lost an
overtime state playoff game to Milton. During the regulation game, Leon had five touchdowns - five

touchdowns! — called back due to penalties. Yes, the game was played in Milton.
Bob Childs’ father was a telegrapher with the railroad in Georgia. When Bob and his sister

were children, they would sometimes hang around the small Georgia train station and watch their
dad work. Bob’s sister learned some Morse code just by watching. One day while the children were

at the station, Bob’s dad had a heart attack and died while on the job. Bob’s little sister, using what
she had learned by watching, telegraphed the other train stations to tell them her father had died.
