Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
Ed Williamson was the CHS Head Football Coach in 1943. Wendell “Dee Dee” Barnes
(CHS, 1947) was a star CHS football player four years later. Ed and Wendell then came together
to each have an important role in FSU’s very first football team. Ed was the Seminole’s first head
rd
coach and Wendell was an offensive leader (3 highest in total offense: 106 yards in the 5-game
schedule) that first year. Want a 3rd Lake City connection to that first FSU team? Phil Rountree,
formerly a PE teacher at Melrose Park Elementary, was one of FSU’s two permanent captains that
initial year and threw the first completed pass in FSU history.
Julian Markham and Henry Williams were two student leaders at CHS. Both pursued
higher education, both got master’s degrees, and both eventually returned to Lake City to serve as
principal of the high school from which they had graduated. Julian served from 1947-49 and Henry
opened the new CHS south of town in 1975.
Scott McCaleb grew up in Lake City, now lives in Jacksonville and is the 1993 president
of the Gator Bowl Association. Chris Sullivan was bom at Lake Shore Hospital and is the co
founder of Outback Steakhouse Restaurants - which is the title sponsor of the 1993 Gator Bowl.
Thus the Gator Bowl will have two strong Lake City connections this year.
Ed Montgomery is putting together a brief biography of his father, “Dr. Mont.” As an
addition to the biography, Ed is going to include any anecdotes (serious or amusing) which any of
his friends would like to have included as a part of the story of his life. Please write the anecdote
in your own words and send it to Ed Montgomery, 627 Evergreen St., Lake City, FL 32055. If for
any reason you cannot write it yourself, you may call 755-1826 (Ed’s study) and give him the details
so that he can write it up.
