Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams

Recalling the Names of the Past

                                                      August 3,1993

Way back when... In the school year 1917-18, there were more than fifty white-only schools
in Columbia County.. Here are the names of some of the schools and communities you may not have

heard of in a long time: Suwannee Shoals, Black Gum, Santiago, Union Hall, East Jefferson,
Antioch, Perch Pond, Good Luck, Senoa, Rocky Ford, Ebenezer, Rose Branch, Sweet Gum,

Whiteville, Bell Springs, Ozark, Log Camp, Avery, Sand Hill and - would you believe - Live Oak,
a school near Fort White where Leola and Cora Lee Hodges taught for a salary of $ 160 each for the

               four-month term.
Something in common... What do Edward Dicks, Ralph Dicks, Steve Dicks, Donald Dicks,

Gary Dicks, Brad Dicks and Rodney Dicks all have in common, other than the same last name? At
some time between 1950 and 1987, they all served a term as either president or vice president of the

Future Farmers of America at CHS.
Remember Ellison Kelly?... He is a member of the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame

and his biography says he was bom in Lake City on May 17,1936. He attended Michigan State and
played for the New York Giants before going to CFL. He played in seven Grey Cup finals (the CFL

Super Bowl), his team winning three. He played thirteen years (175 consecutive games) in the CFL
and he is now on a panel which selects the CFL Stars-of-the-Week.

Farewell to the Mag... The Magnolia Barbecue closed last weekend after more than fifty-
five years in business. A copy of their menu back in 1936 shows that you could buy coffee, cokes
and hot dogs for five cents each. The most expensive item on the menu back then was a shrimp

               basket for seventy-five cents.

All in the family ... At least two father-son combinations have captained CHS football
teams: Hugh Wilson (CHS, 1929) and Jimmy Wilson, (1960); and Eddie Joe (Tiny) Long (1932) and
Eddie Joe (Tiny) Long, Jr. (1957). At least one set of brothers were captains, Billy Cox (1950) and

               Gene Cox (1951).
                                                                                         th
More honors ... The Florida Athletic Coaches Association held its 45 annual meeting in
Jacksonville this past weekend and presented the “Bob Mosher Award” for outstanding service to
Lake City’s Harvey Campbell, executive director of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame. Also honored
