Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire

            Lazarus Heart

Speak to me now of Lazarus
            Come from the tomb,

Waked by a voice that he must obey,
            Called from Death’s womb.

And speak to me of my stirring heart,
            Numb as it lay,

Called and bidden to live again,
            Loathe to obey.

Speak to my slowly rousing heart,

            Help me to know
Life and love can awake again—
            Buds through the snow.

Speak to my newly wakened heart,

            Slow to be turned.
Teach me that life can begin again—

            Lazarus learned.

            Amen!

            Down through the years

I have not lost the awe 1 feel
            Watching a miracle occur.
As seeds push through the ground

And in my garden plants appear,
Each bearing in its fruit seeds of its kind,

            I feel like a co-creator.
Smiling, I lift my face to God

And murmur “You were right, Lord,
            It is good!”
