Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire

            How Now, Brown Cow?

If a certain well-known poet had ever shifted his

Attention from the various subjects he put into
            Rhyme,

            And had taken the time
To give the matter of bizarrely hued cows the

            Very serious thought
            That every profound thinker ought

            Such consideration just possibly might

            Have inspired him to write:
I’ve never seen a purple cow,

            Nor, for that matter, a cerise or green one;
And I hope, when the time comes to write my

            Memoirs I can truthfully vow

That I still have not seen one.
But I can tell you anyhow

That if I am ever faced with the choice,
            I will vociferously give voice

To my ardent conviction that seeing one

Would be infinitely preferable to being one.
And I might add that if the choice is not given to

            Me
And I have to come back

In bovine form, I hope I will be
A conservative dappled brown or black.
