Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire
Situation Ethics
UNDER the new morality
There is no eternal verity.
I have to decide as I go along
Which course is right and which is
Wrong.
By giving careful consideration
To circumstance and situation.
Solomon’s wisdom I need to borrow;
What’s right for now may be wrong
Tomorrow,
For ethics are flexible today.
I liked it better the other way.
Duplication
I worked for hours at the stove
concocting dinner for my love
Who when he saw what I’d served up
Pushed back his plate and would not sup
Or even take up fork and spoon
It seems that’s what he’d had at noon
Through Thin And Thick
I once bemoaned the cruel fate
That kept me always underweight.
I could not then contrive to stuff
Myself with calories enough
To keep from being thin.
Now if I merely saunter by
A piece of cake or custard pie,
Since I’ve become a bit obese,
The calories hop off like fleas
And burrow thorough my skin.
