Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire
Square
I do not care for the frantic beat
Of modern music. I like mine sweet
And low,
And it may be that I don’t know
A lot
About art, but what I like is not
Cubist, Surrealist or Abstract.
In fact,
When I look at a picture, I want to
See
A semblance of what it’s supposed to
Be.
My wardrobe is not even slightly
Mod,
And I don’t believe in the Death of
God;
But the final proof that I’m out of
Date,
And hopelessly behind my time,
Is this. I think a poem should
Communicate,
And scan, and rhyme.
