Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire
Song For A Savage Mood
I am tired of gentle breezes;
Give me a wild wind blowing.
1 am sick to death of dew drops;
Give me lasting rain and hail.
The sickly light of starry skies
Begins to fall.
Give me the thick heavy darkness
Of a deep black night.
Give me purple thunderclouds piled high
And the sudden rending flash
Of jagged lightning
To cure me of the weariness of fleecy clouds.
Give me the raw red gold of blazing sunsets
In place of silver moonlight.
Give me an eagle soaring,
Not a mocking bird.
Give me rough craggy mountain peeks
And the sharp outline against the sky
Of high sheer cliffs.
Give me real elemental things.
Give me vital things that live and breathe.
I’m tired of pallid things that just exist.
