The second game, was a 28-0 romp over
hapless Parker. As in the first game, the
defense played sparkling football, but; this
time the veer clicked like a well-oiled machine.
Touchdowns were scored the first three times
the Tigers had possession of the ball. The final
touchdown came in the final half. Winning so
easily was the push needed to get the Tigers
rolling.
And roll they did, squashing the Sandalwood
Saints 27-7. Tony Robinson bulled for 140
yards. Senior quarterback james McClellan
slipped in all four touchdowns. The defense
exhibited another sparkling performance
allowing only a third quarter score. An
example of the finer defensive play came in the
third quarter setting up the final C.S.H.S.
touchdown: junior defensive end Roger
Morris sacked the Sandalwood Q.B. for a big
loss on a fourth down.
jackson improved against the Tigers; last year
they lost by 47 points, this year they narrowed
the margin to 44 points. The final score read
Columbia High Tigers-58, jackson High
Tigers-14, with all but 7 points chalked up in
the first half. First half touchdowns were
scored by Tony Robinson (run), Kent Gardner
(run), Kent Gardner (pass), james McClellan
(run), Kip Gardner (run), Tony Robinson (run),
and Steve Nail (pass). Defensive end Chris
Harris tackled the jackson punter in the end
zone for a safety in the second quarter. The
second half provided the Gator Bowl
scoreboard operators with needed rest as only
one score was managed by either team -a
short T.D. plunge by junior Q.B. Kenny
Owens. Coach Simmons cleared the bench;
everybody not injured, played with the
reserves getting an entire half to themselves.
junior Cornerback AI Waters generated
excitement in the opening kick-off of the
C.H.S. vs. Englewood game, by running it back
75 yards for a touchdown. Another quick T.D.
was scored less than four minutes later as
james McClellan scampered 59 yards. With
five minutes left in the half, Ronnie Drake
picked off a Ram pass and scrambled 25 yards
for 6 points. Defensive End Alan Pope
recovered a Ram fumble to set up the final
touchdown: a 17 yard half-back option pass
from Kip Gardner to Mike Kahlich. Englewood
scored a touchdown following the Tiger
touchdown. The Tiger crowd left, leaving the
scoreboard to beam: C.S.H.S., 28-
Englewood, 14.
1. Kip Gardner is on the run as #7 james
McClellan starts to pitch out. 2. Receiver
Steve Nail calls for a "fa ir catch" in the
backfield. 3. junior Gary Williams closes in
on a Sandalwood player. 4. #82 Randy
Adams, #41 Doug Lowrey, and #30 Ronnie
Drake watch the action from the side-
lines . 5. It looks as if nobody is going any-
where with the Tiger defense.
