                                                                                 Program  for  High
                                                                               School  Advancement

                                                                                 ALPHA,  or the Alternative Learning
                                                                                Program  for  High  School  Advance-
                                                                                ment, is working to keep the drop-out
                                                                                rate  of  the  Columbia  County  school
                                                                                system  at  an  absolute  minimum.
                                                                                 Johnie  Merrick  worked  as  the  co-
                                                                                cordinator of CHS's  ALPHA  program,
                                                                                which  included  some  70  students.
                                                                                "We  had  one  fellow  who  made
                                                                                straight F's and  after his first  semes-
                                                                                ter  in  ALPHA,  he  made  A's  and  B's.
                                                                                They (the kids) need someone to care
