SCHOOL SYSTE
Superintendent Lane guides
school system into the future
Senior Class President looks for answers about restructuring:
1990 and 1991 have been years of change and Improvement In the school
system. Superintendent Dianne Lane has been leading the move to
restructuring the school 'System and putting Improvements In place so the
system can function more effectively. Students have faced the challenge of
coming to school with a new roof being constructed with all the accompanying
annoyances. Seniors have struggled to graduate In the face of "lost"
privileges and the surprise of Mr. Herring's termination. However, the move
towards change has brought a new sense of purpose for the students and staff
who hope for the best and look forward to an even more succe'ssful system In
the future. Changes are not made on a whim, and although some things are
hard to accept, the staff and students know that the best Is yet to come.
The opening of the beautiful 7th and 8th Grade Center had brought a
renewed sense of pride to students throughout the county. Even though the
present student body will not have the opportunity to attend a "new" school,
everyone Is glad that a new facility has been added.
Katrina Vinzant visited with the Superintendent and posed questions about
the changes that are taking place.
0." Mrs. Lane, could you please explain your reasons for so many changes In
the school systems administration. How do you think these changes will
Improve the school system?"
A. "There are many Ideas that form the basis for restructuring the school
system. The last time the system had been reorganized was 12 years ago. A
consultant from the Department of Education came and gave us help and
guidance. He state that every system should look at their organization every
three years. So this change and development was long overdue. In the past
12 years many new responsibilities have been placed on the school system by
the federal and state governments. These new responsibilities have to be
given to administrators and direction needs to be provided to all members of
the system. The most Important thing that the school system deals with Is
curriculum. It should never be placed on the back burner of education. I
wanted to reorganize the system so we had one person in our school system
who's responsibility was curriculum. That one person Is Dr. Lynn Smith, our
assistant superintendent of schools . I must say that restructuring the school

system Is the thing I am most proud of In my job as Superintendent.
