George Porter & D'Andre Combs do more than cook. Keep cooking those rise and shine biscuits, girls!
The Tiger Diner is actually a part of the Food and
Services at COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL. It is mainly
operated by students enrolled in the 2nd and 3rd year
programs. First year students may help out with table-
setting and some food preparation as the year progresses.
Students enrolled in the 2nd and 3rd year programs are
responsible for organizing; setting up; advertising; deter-
mining costs; planning menus; preparing meals; and ser-
vicing of customers. As they go through the different
preparation stations, such as pastries, desserts, pies,
meats, soups, fruits, vegetables, pasta products, fry sta-
tion, appetizers, etc., they will incorporate new food dish-
es into the diner.
The Tiger Diner actually originated when Mrs. Levy
was the food production and services teacher. It enables
the food production and services students a chance to
utilize the skills learned in class and to experience the
running of a "business". After Mrs. Levy retired, Ms.
Bender continued the diner. The students decided in 1988
to keep the original name. At the present, the diner oper-
ates three days a week (Tues, Wed, Thurs.) featuring a
salad bar, deli, soup/ chili and at least one day a week a hot
meal. Students are assigned stations during the operation
time and rotate throughout the year in order to gain expe-
rience in a variety of jobs.
The Tiger Diner also operates a bakery after school and
accepts catering jobs.
Preston Allen, we never knew you could cook! Edwin Henry is that why you smell so good?
