Pep Rallies
You walk through the doors of the overcrowded gym. It opens up to a vast room
full of hyped-up teens ready to cheer on their class. You see experienced seniors,
with their wigs and class sign held high; the freshmen who sit relatively still, but
cheer when they have to; Sophomores, no longer Freshmen, making a place for
themselves; Juniors, almost top dog, but just barely. All classes yell at the top of
their lungs to win the spirit stick, ever changing in size and design, bigger and
better every time. It overwhelms you: the sound, the hype, the energy buzzing
around the gym. Being in high school is about living, learning and experiencing
things for the first time. Pep rallies change as you move up in the totem pole. You
realize that you want to enjoy them while you can, because memories that last a
life time start when you walk through those gym doors.
Band
You may not think it's true, but the battles never end when it comes to
band. There's the individuals competing to earn the coveted first chair. The
sections, working their hardest to be labeled "section of the week" and the
battle between woodwinds and brass to be the best. Of course, you have
the battle which the whole band fights together to win at competition or
to earn a "superior" rating. Whatever the competition may be, no one in the
Columbia band is going down without a fight!
