In September of 2011 ,
                                                                         King Abdullah of
                                                                       Saudi Arabia surprised
                                                                      his ultraconservative
                                                                     nation. He announced
                                                                    that women will
                                                                    have the right to
                                                                    vote and run
                                                                    for local office
                                                                     by the
                                                                      year 2015.








          In  a ceremony steeped  in  tradition  and  symbolism , Prince
          William , the second  in  line to the British throne, married
          h1s  longtime girlfriend, Kate Middleton, on  Apnl 29, 2011 .






















          Three women from Afnca and the  Middle East were awarded
          the  Nobel Peace Prize  In  October of 2011. Sharing the award
          were Liberian  President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa 's first
          democratically elected female president; her countrywoman
          Leymah Gbowee, a peace activist who challenged warlords;       In  November of 2011 , hundreds of "Occupy
          and  Tawakul Karman  (pictured above), a Yemeni  human rights   Wall  Street" protesters marched through the
          leader seeking to  overthrow an  autocratic regime as  part of the   financial district trying to shut off access to the
          regionwide "Arab Spring" movement.                             New York Stock Exchange and  major banks.
