Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams
The chance to give back to my community, who gave me so much
comfort and support through the heavy part of my treatment, has been a
blessing.
The dance team gave me something to focus on besides losing my hair
and weight gain from the medicine I had to take.
They received 1st place this summer at UF for their home routine that I
choreographed which gave me a wonderful sense of accomplishment
and pride.
Last September I participated in “Light the Night Walk for Leukemia.”
We formed a team from my hometown that raised $675.00 to go towards
research for a cure.
Our team will again be participating this year and my hopes are to raise
awareness through my classmates at college as well.
My reasons for wanting to be awarded a scholarship are simple.
Financially, the last year and a half has depleted our family with over
$150,000 that my treatment has cost and that’s not including travel,
food, and lodging during the critical parts of treatment.
My treatment is not over as I am currently in what they call
“Maintenance” which still requires monthly outpatient visits, lab
procedures, and daily oral chemo and quarterly IV chemotherapy. My
end of treatment will be November of 2002.
Until then, I cannot work but I want to further my education. Many have
told me that I shouldn’t mention that I have cancer as it may cost me a
scholarship. For whatever the reason would be not to, I feel that my
honesty to you as a cancer survivor should not be a liability but instead
an asset.
The road you travel in life has many bumps, twists and turns, but the key
to success is determination and setting goals. I have goals and have
