Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams

tobacco to cancer pretty much killed the once-thriving local tobacco
market and now only memories like Irene's remain.

By the way, those busy tobacco seasons of long ago featured a Tobacco
Queen. It was a very big deal, easily comparable to Prom Queen and
Homecoming Queen. Five of the many who held that title were Mary
Jeanette McConnell. Nan Bodiford, Edith McNair, Norma Jean Harrison,
                 and Faye Revels.

                 CHIEF"S MEMORIAL

                 W. T. (Will)) Strange was the first local police
officer killed in the line of duty. He was shot November 27,1900, and
                 died the next day.

This simple hand written memorial was recorded in the city's official
minutes: "'In memory of Wm. T. Strange, age 31, Marshal of Lake City,
Florida, who died Nov. 28,1900, from a wound inflicted while in the
discharge of duty, by a Negro outlaw on Nov. 27th, 1900."

Marshal Strange's name appears on the Lake DeSoto monument along with
the names of all other local law enforcement officers who have died in
                  the line of duty.

                  STUDENT SALESGIRLS

When Leah Burnette and Cindy Schoch Dicks were CHS students, just the
two of them sold all 20 of the business ads that appeared on the 1974
                  CHS stadium cushions. .

                  MIKESVILLE'S 130TH

Rev. Herb Brownlee and his Mikesville Presbyterian Church celebrated
their 130th anniversary last Sunday and every pew was filled. Pastor
Herb preached a first class sermon, the music was outstanding, and the
dinner on the grounds was indescribably delicious.

All in all, it was a first class day and the leadership of member
Frances Nettles Wilson helped make it so.

Frances has been a natural born leader all her life. For example, she
was the first girl ever to be elected President of the Fort White High
School Student Council. During her high school career she also served as
class president, Beta Club president, FHA president, and Business
