Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams
WHITE SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL
White Springs High School existed for 40 years, from 1925-65.
Periodically, homecomings are held at the old school where former
students and faculty get together and talk old times. They had such a
meeting April 1 and I, a CHS graduate, dropped in to see what I could
learn from the 200 or so who attended. One of the things I learned was
that a lot of educators I associated with Lake City actually got their start
at WSHS. Some were
*Martha Bullard who taught several years at Lake City Junior High School
and eventually retired there under Principal P. A. Browning.
*Sybil Hunziker who is a well-known local Adult Education teacher who
specializes in teaching English as a second language to new citizens.
*Lassie Goodbread Black, who was a local community leader, first woman
enrollee at UF, and a Florida ‘Mother of the Year.’
*Ann Crow who taught English and typing many years at Lake City Junior
High School along with her husband Ned, a math teacher.
*Albert Rumph who later became principal at Fort White High School and
then served two terms as Columbia County School Superintendent (1949
57).
*Harold Morgan who is best known for starting the Driver Education
program at CHS.
*W.B. (‘W.B.’ meant Wild Bill to the students when Professor Feagle’s
back was turned.) He served as CHS principal in the 1940’s between
Jerome Eastham and Oscar Smith.
*Hal Worth who has strong Lake City ties spent 30 years at the White
Springs School, eight as a teacher and 22 as principal
Two other names jumped out as me as I read materials on display. One
was former WSHS principal William R. Hall who later was principal at Live
Oak’s Suwannee High School where he hired Gene Cox (CHS 1952) as a
