Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Thirteen: 1930 - 1939
Inconspicuous plaque
One of Lake City’s in-
conspicuous monuments dates
back to 1934. The wording on
a monument (pictured to the
right) in a wooded area just
east of the Lake Shore Hos-
pital notes the following: “This
lot donated by W. H. Wilson
in memory of his deceased
wife Etha Hankins Wilson who departed this life July 16, 1934, at
Lake City, Florida.”
Churches in Lake City
In 1930, members of the local Presbyterian Church added to
their facility at 226 West Nassau Street an annex that was later named
to honor Dr. T.J. Hackney and his family because of their many
contributions to the church.
Before the 1930s, the local First Baptist Church with about
eight hundred members was the only Baptist Church in the city, but in
1939 officials established the Southside Baptist Church on the corner
of Church and Baya streets, giving the city two Baptist churches.
The Lake City Elks Club Band performed in the 1930s.
