In 1930, members of the local Presbyterian Church added to
their facility at 226 West Nassau Street an annex that was later named
to honor Dr. T.J. Hackney and his family because of their many
                                 contributions to the church.
Before the 1930s, the local First Baptist Church with about
eight hundred members was the only Baptist Church in the city, but in
1939 officials established the Southside Baptist Church on the corner
of Church and Baya streets, giving the city two Baptist churches.
