Frederick Preston Cone,
(1871 – 1948) the 27th
governor of the state (1937
– 1941), was born at
Benton in Columbia
County on September 28,
1871, the son of William
H. and Sarah Emily
(Branch) Cone. He
attended Florida
Agricultural College and
Jasper Normal College,
was admitted to the bar in
1892, and practiced in
Governor Cone Lake City. He served as a
State Senator (1907 –
1913) and Senate President (1911), was defeated for the U.S.
Senate (1940), and returned to Lake City, where he died
on July 28, 1948.
Other local people in the 1930s
Attorney Bill Roy (CHS 1939) is a member of the United
States “Space Walk of Fame” Foundation “for his substantial
contributions to honor the men and women who made the U.S. Space
Program possible and to preserve the program’s history for generations
to come.”
Dena Snodgrass, who taught at CHS in the 1930s, moved
to Jacksonville and became a well-known historian of Duval County
and Florida history.
