Chapter Fourteen: 1940 - 1949
Columbia High School
CHS’s legendary football coach Hobart “Hobe” Hooser
coached at CHS from 1931 to 1942, after which he went into the
college coaching ranks and was a top assistant at Tennessee, Arkan-
sas, and Florida. He often said privately that his happiest coaching
days were in Lake City. He died
January 3, 1988.
One of the graduates of CHS
in 1945 went on to have the state-
wide Florida High School Activities
Association (FHSAA) Good
Sportsmanship Award named after
him. Fred E. Rozelle, born and
raised in Lake City, became com-
missioner of the FHSAA and a
member of the FHSAA Hall of
Fame and also the Florida Athletic
Coaches Hall of Fame.
The 1947 CHS boys’ bas-
ketball team coached by Jim Melton won the state championship.
