Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
A player on that 1947 championship team was George Allen
“Pat” Summerall (1930 - ), who won All-State honors in both foot-
ball and basketball; he also earned varsity letters in both baseball and
tennis. He then played college football (1949 – 1951) at the Univer-
sity of Arkansas (UA), where he played defensive end, tight end, and
place-kicker. He graduated from UA in 1953 and spent ten years as
a professional football player in the National Football League, prima-
rily as a place-kicker. After retiring, he had a successful career as a
sports broadcaster.
Pat Summerall, born in Lake City, was Florida state high school
tennis champion at age 16, and played professional football for
the Detroit Lions, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Giants. He
was hired by CBS as an announcer in 1961.
Pat’s birth name was George Allen Summerall. His first cousin’s
name was Floyd L. Kennon. As children, they played together a lot,
like two of the popular comic-strip children of the day named Pat and
Mike. Thus friends nicknamed the boys “Pat” Summerall and “Mike”
Kennon, names that have stuck to this day.
