Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Sixteen: 1960 - 1969
Chapter Sixteen: 1960 - 1969
The 1960s saw major changes in the city. Racial integration
of public facilities around Lake City took place without major inci-
dents. The city became even more connected to places further north
and south with the completion of interstate highways I-75 and I-10
nearby. State and federal agencies built facilities in the city because of
its central location, facilities that provided many people with good
jobs. State agencies (the Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Forest Ser-
vice, Florida Road Department Division, and the Game and Fresh
Water Fish Commission) joined federal facilities (the Forest Service
Conservation Services, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Vet-
erans Administration Hospital), and they provided more than thirty
percent of the personal income to county residents while agriculture
slipped to just eleven percent.
A group of state officials opened a segment
of Interstate-75 near Lake City in 1964.
