Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Sixteen: 1960 - 1969
Occupational licenses
Occupational License and Subdivision ordinance handbooks
from 1960 show that most occupational licenses cost from $10-$100
per year for standard businesses, but there were some interesting and
expensive exceptions. For example, an “astrologer engaged in
foretelling the future” had to pay $800 for an occupational license. A
“Divine Healer” had to pay the same. A license for “Exhibits of freaks
or other curiosities” had to pay $20 PER DAY. Hawkers who by
haranguing “shall attempt to induce the assembling of people to sell
medicines or drugs” had to pay $50 daily. Some unusual occupations
listed were umbrella repairmen, knife and scissor sharpeners, cooper
smiths, Ferro typists, oculists, and phrenologists.
On June 4, 1961, Southern Bell officials announced
that Lake City’s phones were 100% dial.
