Chapter Sixteen: 1960 - 1969
Integration of the schools, including the athletic teams, took
place in the late 1960s without incident. The Lake City Junior
High basketball team, coached by Rhea Hart (on the far right
above), had their first black athlete, Andre Tunsil: (left to right,
first row) Mike Vinson, Mike Tillotson, Rudy Johnson, David
Fike, Steve Marlow, Andre Tunsil, and Johnny King. Middle
row: Johnnie Sandlin,Walt Peterson, and Bobby Houston.
Third row: Mike Blocker, Larry Lee, Steve Dorch, Mike
Stalvey, Charlie Saunders, and Pat Hunter.
The Lake City Chapter of New Farmers of America in the 1960s -
the student standing above the word “New” is long-time
county commissioner Ron Williams (see arrow).
