Local people in the 1960s
Church choir director Alphonso Levy of Lake City
with a segregated children’s choir performed at the Florida Folk
Festival at White Springs, Florida. Levy was the music director
at Niblack Elementary School and
Trinity Methodist Church choir in Lake City.
The county superintendents of public instruction in the 1960s
were Buford H. Galloway (1957 - 1968) and Silas Pittman (1968
- 1973). Mr. Galloway had been a young agriculture teacher at Mason
City and Fort White before serving as principal at Fort White High
School and then school superintendent, a post he held for three terms.
As School Superintendent, he was a major force in bringing Lake
City Junior College to Lake City.
