Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Seventeen: 1970 - 1979
Chapter Seventeen: 1970 - 1979
In the 1970s the local two-year college had an important
change of name, integration of local facilities occurred without major
incidents, and twenty-three local men died or went missing in the Viet-
nam War.
Lake City Community College
In 1970, education officials dropped the “junior” in place of
“community” for the local college to emphasize the broader spectrum
of uses (transfer and occupational programs) and its community
education and service courses. Although part of the previous name
(“Forest Ranger School”) was dropped, the logo of the school retains
a link to the forestry part of its former curriculum. The men’s basketball
program at the college was state runner-up in 1968 and state
champions in 1970, the same year they placed third in the National
Junior College tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Richardson High School
The main building of Richardson High School
was torn down about 1978.
