The Richardson 9th Grade Center had one of the first
racially integrated classrooms in the city around 1970.
Columbia High School
When Richardson High School closed and black students
began attending Columbia High School (CHS) in 1970, the latter
school got some outstanding coaches and students. For example, the
first black coach at CHS was Glynn Presley. The first black cheer-
leaders were Jeanette Davis and Mary Mosely. Running back
John Jackson was the first black player to score a touchdwon for
CHS. Alton Denson was the first black athlete to receive a top award
at a Tiger football banquet when he won the “Best Defensive Back”
trophy. The black athletes helped CHS post a fine 9 - 2 record that
year.
