Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Nineteen: 1990 - 1999
Lake City’s downtown began to change in the 1990s and
continues to evolve in the 2000s, as local merchants have helped
revitalize it with new businesses, restaurants, and shops. A modern
gazebo was built to replace the original one and was relocated to the
north end of Olustee Park. A wading pool for children was added.
Many horticultural improvements were made, and modern lighting was
installed to improve illumination for night-time activities. Elaborate
Christmas lighting and other decorations are set up during the Yule-
tide season.
To the right of the downtown pavilion is a memorial
to local soldiers who fought and died in different wars.
The most recent memorial to the Columbia Countians who
served in the Armed Services is in Olustee Park downtown. It honors
those who served in Iraq: “Dedicated July 3, 1991, by the North East
Florida Leadership Council, Inc. In honor of the Columbia County
Desert Storm Military Personnel.”
