Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Nineteen: 1990 - 1999
Community theater
Many have thought that a town the size of Lake City, with all
the talent in the city, would have a community theater, but it does not.
The city missed a good chance back in 1993, when a group of Lake
City and High Springs actors got together and successfully presented
the play “Rainmaker.” The hope was that “Rainmaker” would be a
springboard for the two communities to establish their own community
theaters. High Springs took the opportunity and ran with it. Since then
the people there have produced over 70 shows—dramas and children’s
plays. Some 50 Lake City actors and actresses have performed at
the High Springs Community Theater (HSCT) over the years. (See
their web site: myhsct.com.) Almost that many have directed plays
there or worked in lighting, set construction, costume design, and other
back-stage jobs. Lots of local Lake City teens and younger children
have performed there. Over 30% of the regular HSCT audience are
from Lake City.
A theater/performing arts center near Lake City is Lake City
Community College’s beautiful facility (see photo below). In 1993,
officials dedicated it to Alfonso Levy, one of the most talented
musicians and directors in the area. He and his wife, Celestine, have
long been vital members of the community.
