Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Eight 1880 - 1889
Among the other church news that decade were these points:
In 1880, the Rev. Charles Snowden, using much of his own money
and labor, completed the building of St. James Episcopal Church at
the corner of South Alachua and West Nassau streets. Next door
was the rectory, and St. James Academy was in front of the church.
Rev. Snowden served the church there from 1871 to 1886. The Rt.
Rev. John Freeman Young, Bishop of Florida, consecrated that
church in 1884.
In 1881, in Lake City, officials of the Baptist Church orga-
nized the State Board of Missions of the Florida Baptist Convention.
Around 1886, Father Hugon arrived in Lake City and built
the Catholic church. He actually hand carved the altar. He adminis-
tered the Mission of Lake City from his headquarters in Tallahassee.
Priests also stationed in Tallahassee held services in Lake City once
or twice each month, a situation that would prevail until 1940.
Dr. R.L. Honiker was the pastor of the Methodist Church in
1886. Workers built the second frame church at the corner of Marion
and Dade streets.
The Presbyterians built their present church in 1887 - 1888
and completely paid off the debt. An old wooden-frame building be-
fore then had served the community for thirty years. The pastor lived
in his own home, which was eventually torn down to build a manse for
the preacher and his family.
In the 1880s, the First Presbyterian Church was located
at the corner of South Columbia and West Nassau streets.
