Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy

A fire department was established in 1883 to complement a
police department, which had begun during the Civil War.

In 1883 Fire Chief George O. Adicks Sr. organized a volunteer
company of 24 men in Lake City to fight fires with a hand
                                            pumper, bucket, and ladder wagon.
A horse to pull the wagon was not added until 1908.

                                                              Local buildings

Among the buildings built in the 1880s that were meant to
withstand the rash of fires that had destroyed many wooden buildings
in Lake City in previous decades was the Coates Mill, which opened
in 1880 near the railroad tracks downtown, and the Collins Bank,
which opened in 1884 and later became the Bank of Lake City, the
                              city’s first bank.
Lake City’s first opera house, Cleveland Hall, opened in the
early 1880s on the second floor of a building that is now on the corner
                              occupied by the City Hall.
