                                                Other schools in town


                                     In 1903, the Peabody Graded and High School, which had
                              relocated to West Duval Street in 1893, became the Columbia Graded
                              and High School. Education became a topic of much discussion in the
                              early 20th century as officials and other residents realized that con-
                              solidating small, rural schools into larger facilities would allow the stu-
                              dents to have better equipment and a more up-to-date curriculum.


                                     The first building of what became Columbia High School was
                              a wooden one that lasted from 1893 to 1906. The second one was a
                              sturdier brown, brick building that lasted from 1906 to 1922. Both
                              buildings were later used as elementary schools. That second one
                              (see photo below with black arrow) had “Lake City High School” on
                              its center part.
