Aunt Aggie’s Bone Yard
Also near the downtown was Aunt Aggie’s Bone Yard, a
unique collection of bones that visitors enjoyed looking at.
Acccording to Edward Keuchel’s History of Columbia County,
Florida, Aunt Aggie and her husband, Jenkins “Uncle Jenks”
Jones, had a home in the northern part of the city, where
Richardson High School was later located. Aunt Aggie, a former
slave, maintained a garden that had as its main attraction a collec-
tion of animal bones wired together to form arches, trellises, and
gateways for plants and vines. 32
The east parking lot of the V. A. Medical Center was the first
football field used by CHS. The field was called “The Fairgrounds”
because the Florida State Fair had been held there in 1905. This was
the field where Dr. T. H. Bates scored CHS’s first-ever touchdown.
