A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks
from his widow, Mrs. Loretta Pearce, by retired Highway Patrolman, Dewy Gay, who still owns it
together with another forty acres to the East of it which had belonged to my Father and Dewy’s
Grandfather, Reverend John Dicks, at which place Dewy Gay lives today.
The Gabe Shears forty acres lies exactly one mile East of U.S. Hwy. 41-441, on the North side of Gabe
road, which continues Easterly from there for another quarter mile, at which point it dead ends at the
Price Creek Highway.
1 remember that Gabe Shears was a respected member of the community which lies South of Hopeful
Church today, and that he actively farmed up until his death, probably not too long after the
conversation which I have recounted here.
Some of my business associates and other people in the Lake City community have expressed to me,
their curiosity as to why I am not a big supporter of the Olustee Festival, and why I do not actively
celebrate the Battle of Olustee. That conversation that my Father had with Gabe Shears should answer
that question. I personally simply do not see anything to celebrate.
