Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
It Was Twenty-five Years Ago
November 3,1992
Twenty-five years ago. That championship season. CHS Tigers, Class ‘A’ 1967 State
Football Champions. Lake City’s dream come true. We’re Number One! Thirteen straight wins!
Game No. 1 and we’re behind Orange Park 7-6 the first time we’ve ever played them, with
just two minutes and five seconds to go. Then Pete Giebeig catches a Brian Johnson pass and
Robbie Dobelstien returns an interception for a 70- yard TD and we winl9-7.
Games 2-5 are all Tiger shutouts. St Augustine fall 49-0 as Craig Busby kicks seven extra
points. Bishop Kenny falls 40-0 as Dobelstein and Busby both score twice. Bolles falls 20-0 as
Dobelstein has an 80-yard kickoff return, Busby scores on a 46-yarder, and Danny Green pile-drives
in on a short run. The Tigers maul Santa Fe of Lakeland 60-0, leading 37-0 after the first quarter.
Game 6 sees the Tigers claw the Ocala Wildcats 47-7. Steve DeLoach of Ocala becomes the
first opposing player to score against the Tigers since the Orange Park game, on a one-yard run.
Game 7 sees the Tigers eke out a tough 20-14 victory over Rickards High in Tallahassee and learn
later they will have to face the Redskins again in the state playoffs after the regular season ends.
Games 8 is a Homecoming victory over strong Palatka, 13-0. Doblestein electrifies an
overflowing crowd with a break-away 74-yard TD run. For the first time ever, Brian Johnson fails
to complete a single pass and CHS has zero passing yardage for the game.
Game 9 is at Starke and there is “bad blood” between them.. Starke had kept CHS out of the
playoffs the past two years in hard-fought struggles. This year several scuffles break out on the
field. Tiger fans complain of being hit by sand bags during the game. Stark Coach David Hurse
accused CHS Coach Paul Quinn of “running up the score on us, trying to embarrass us.” Coach
Quinn countered that Coach Hurse refused to shake hands with him. Final score: Tigers 59, Starke
6.
Games 10 is a “dream game” pitting Lake City (9-0) and Live Oak (9-0) on Thanksgiving
night to decide who stays undefeated, wins the Florida Star Conference, and goes to the state playoffs
- and throw in the Old Oaken Bucket prize to top it off. Over 9,000 fans fill Memorial Stadium to
see if the Tigers can stop Bulldog great Andy Cheney. No contest. Johnson passes for five
touchdowns and the Tigers win 40-13.
